Dana Gas acquires affiliate Danagaz Bahrain

Salik goes live

The controversial Salik road toll came into operation in Dubai at midnight last night. Toll gates have been established at the fourth interchange on Sheikh Zayed Road and on Al Garhoud Bridge, with motorists being charged Dhs4 per journey, and a maximum of Dhs24 in a day. Motorists who have not purchased special Salik tags and attached them to their windscreens will be fined Dhs100 for passing under the toll gates.

Petrol stations in Dubai were yesterday, Saturday, reporting a very brisk trade in Salik road toll tags, reported Gulf News. Shop managers said a large number of motorists had decided to buy their tags at the last minute, the day before the system came into operation. Drivers can buy the tags at selected Enoc, Emarat and Eppco stations, as well as the Dubai Islamic Bank and Emirates Bank.

Prizes for UAE nationals

UAE national students who achieve the highest marks in the General Secondary School Certificate examinations will be awarded a cash prize of Dhs100,000, a scholarship and a laptop, according to the local WAM news agency. The award has been introduced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as an incentive for pupils to go on to further academic success.

Kurds offer 40 oil blocks

The Kurdish regional government in Iraq is to invite bids from foreign companies for 40 oil blocks with a view to the new national oil law being agreed shortly, reported Reuters. The authority is planning investor conferences in Erbil, London and possibly Houston and its Oil Minister Ashti Hawrami said firms which are in a position to 'organise themselves quickly' will be in pole position to win the tenders.

Kipco ends AUB talks

The Kuwait Projects Company has pulled out of negotiations to buy a stake in Bahrain's Ahli United Bank, although a later resumption of talks is still possible, according to Reuters citing the Al Qabas daily. It is believed Kipco was prepared to pay around $1.8 per share but this was too far below the $2 demanded by the AUB. Kipco has been looking at Tamdeen Investment's stake in the AUB.
